What To Expect With SPRAVATO

Searching for effective mental health treatment is not always easy. Traditional treatments can come with unwanted side effects, long trial-and-error periods before you notice results, or be ineffective for about one in three individuals.

If you are living with depression and have not found relief through standard medications, SPRAVATO is an innovative treatment that may renew your hope for a path forward. This nasal spray is clinically proven to work for individuals who have not responded to other treatments. At The Grant Group, our dedicated team is here to help you understand what to expect with SPRAVATO and determine whether this innovative treatment is right for you.

What Is SPRAVATO?

SPRAVATO is an FDA-approved treatment for treatment-resistant depression (TRD) and suicidal ideation in adults. Administered as a nasal spray containing esketamine, this treatment works by acting on the brain’s NMDA receptors to modulate glutamate and balance neurotransmitters, which improves mood and emotional regulation. Understanding how SPRAVATO treatment works can help you better prepare for what to expect during care.

Is SPRAVATO Effective?

SPRAVATO can offer profound symptom reduction for people with severe depression who have not responded to other treatments such as antidepressants. Many patients who used SPRAVATO experienced significant improvement in mood after three months of SPRAVATO use, many of whom felt a complete resolve in symptoms.

You can expect to feel relief with SPRAVATO more quickly than with traditional antidepressants, making it a good treatment option for those experiencing suicidal thoughts. Many experience a shift in mood within just 24 hours after their first dose. This makes it a great treatment option for those who need immediate intervention, such as those experiencing suicidal thoughts.

What To Expect For Your Treatment Timeline

Your SPRAVATO doses will be administered on a phase-based dosing schedule, as this has been clinically proven to be the most effective way to sustain mood improvement and emotional regulation. The initial phase of your SPRAVATO treatment will typically last four weeks, during which you will come to our office twice a week for treatment. The goal of this phase is to quickly and safely reduce symptoms.

After completing your first month of treatment, you will then transition to the maintenance phase. You can expect to continue coming to our office once per week for an additional four weeks, then as needed to sustain your results.

While this timeline is evidence-based to provide the most significant mental health improvement, we recognize that each individual has different psychiatric needs and can adjust this timeline as needed based on your progress, so you know what to expect at each stage of SPRAVATO treatment.

How Long Are Treatments?

You can expect to self-administer SPRAVATO nasal spray in our office under the careful supervision of one of our psychiatry providers, who will monitor your mental and physical health for about two hours. Your safety is our priority, and we will be here throughout the duration of your treatment to manage any side effects that may arise. Esketamine has sedative effects, so you may feel drowsy or dissociated during and after treatment. To ensure your safety, we will need you to arrange for someone to drive you home.
