ADHD Diagnosis and Treatment for Adults and Teenagers

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), also known as attention deficit disorder (ADD), is a mental disorder in which a person exhibits continuous inattention, hyperactivity and, at times, impulsivity. When untreated, these symptoms disrupt normal functioning and development. For about one-third of patients, ADHD often begins in childhood and persists into adulthood.

Three Characteristic Symptoms of ADHD

If a person shows one or more of the following behaviors, then he or she may have ADHD.

  • Inattention– Finds it difficult to focus for a long period of time, is disorganized, easily gets off track when performing a task, and lacks mental stamina.
  • Hyperactivity– Moves about constantly, especially during inappropriate situations, and fidgets, taps or talks without discretion. May exhibit or feel extreme restlessness or exhaust others with their persistent activity.
  • Impulsivity– Acts impatiently with little thought to consequences, often intrudes inappropriately in social situations, and excessively interrupts others.

ADHD and Age

ADHD appears in children as young as pre-school age, characterized mostly in the form of hyperactivity. As they grow older, they may exhibit either of the behaviors individually or a combination of two or all three.

In the past few decades, more cases of ADHD have been identified than ever before, especially for adults. Adults with ADHD may have likely had ADHD since childhood but were diagnosed only much later.

Treatment for ADHD

No cure currently exists for ADHD, but patients with this condition have a number of treatment options. Psychotherapy, medicine, education or training, applied individually or together, can reduce symptoms and improve functioning. With the proper diagnosis and treatment, ADHD can be managed.

Our staff of caring mental health professionals at The Grant Group conducts a thorough examination of each patient, paying close attention to a combination of the patient’s personality, biology and life story. After a proper diagnosis is determined, they provide a treatment plan that best fits each patient’s lifestyle and clinical needs.
